The Calabria Region

             Calabria , Italy             Italy paper flag, 11" x 8" at £0.49

Information About the Area

The locations for our Calabria developments are all coastal towns along the coastline between Bianco and Siderno, this is on the eastern side of Calabria. It is just a short drive around the coast to reach the main city from which the region is named, Reggio di Calabria. From here you have stunning views over the Straights of Messina to the mountains of Sicily, you can take a short ferry ride across the straights, it takes just a few minutes.

This area of Italy is much less developed, with relatively few vacation home owners, thus property prices are still really good value for the money. Our “Italian Connection” the Medsea Estates group, recently featured in the Sky Real Estate program about Calabria and southern Italy. The region is set to experience much more media attention over the coming months, as it is considered an important emerging market.

With increasing numbers of flights to all areas of , with budget airlines, prices in many other regions, particularly neighboring Puglia, have risen sharply over the last few years. Since Ryan Air (www.RyanAir.com) started to fly into the local Calabrian International Airport at Lamezia Terme, other low cost airlines are now rumored to be seriously looking at the potential of the area.

Miles of beaches, contrasted by stunning mountain scenery and national parks

The area has a combination of long stretches of beach, where you can walk for miles, and numerous quiet coves. Everywhere you look inland towards the hills and mountains you see hilltop towns and villages, such as Gerace, with it’s 500 year old Cathedral, to explore. Art and architecture abounds, with evidence of a history dating back to pre-roman times, and as far back as the Greek communities who lived here then. There is even a local ski resort up in the mountains near Reggio di Calabria.

Indulge in the Italian passion – FOOD!

Pasta, Pesche (fish) and Pastelleria - Calabria is ’s market garden, an abundance of fresh produce

The food of the region is as diverse as the area itself, and such incredible value for money compared to other Mediterranean resort areas. Apart from all the fresh fish and seafood, the local wine is a well kept secret and very good, and you simply cannot miss your morning espresso or latte while you try one of their treats from the pastelleria counter.

Most of the properties are located right on the sea front, either in resort towns or within walking distance of a resort centre.  Places such as Bianco, Roccella Jonica, Caulonia and Monasterace are all popular holiday destinations with beautiful sandy beaches, plenty of shops, bars, restaurants and facilities. Water sports and especially scuba divers will enjoy the Ionian coast and sea, particularly those interested in underwater archaeology.

Roccella Jonica is a favored modern resort with an air of glamour. Every August an International Jazz Festival is held attracting musicians from all over the world. Fabulous beaches, open park and boardwalk areas all ideal for an evening walk. Excellent restaurants with fresh seafood, local produce and regional wine all contribute to the very relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere of Roccella.

Caulonia itself is actually an historic hilltop town some 300 yards from the coast, but our properties here are along the seafront and marina area. No wonder they have named the apartments Vista Montagna with these views.  Local festivals in the summer, Greek and Roman remains and history make Caulonia Marina a very interesting place.

Monasterace is a smaller town, also with an old town perched atop a hill overlooking the Marina. This old town is dotted with churches, narrow streets and plenty of character and local characters!

Throughout this region of the Garden of Italy Calabria – the emphasis is on fresh produce, particularly seafood, fresh local fruit and vegetables, but spicy food is also popular around here, in fact Italy’s spiciest food is to be found in this area – watch out for those peppers in the salami!
